From Hospital Recovery to Home Comfort – Richard’s Story
Background
Richard, a 76-year-old man with long-standing sleep apnea, had been using a standard CPAP mask at home for several years. After being hospitalized with acute pneumonia, Richard’s respiratory condition rapidly declined, and his clinical team needed to act fast to avoid invasive intubation.
Solution
Given his history with full face CPAP masks, the hospital respiratory team selected Sleepnet’s Veraseal®3 Full Face Non Vented Mask for Richard’s non-invasive ventilation (NIV) treatment. The AIR°gel® cushion technology and soft, ergonomic seal helped provide the comfort and fit Richard needed to tolerate therapy during a critical moment.
NIV has become a preferred treatment option for select patients with acute respiratory failure caused by pneumonia, particularly when the goal is to avoid intubation. NIV helps improve oxygenation, reduce the work of breathing, and lower the risk of complications associated with invasive ventilation, such as infection from an open airway (PubMed 2024, “Clinical Review of Non-Invasive Ventilation).
For aging patients like Richard, who may have multiple comorbidities, NIV offers a less invasive and more comfortable alternative with fewer risks. According to Science Direct, early application of NIV in patients with respiratory distress from pneumonia has been associated with improved outcomes and reduced need for intubation (Science Direct, Noninvasive ventilation improves the outcome in patients with pneumonia-associated respiratory failure: Systematic review and meta-analysis).
Implementation
The Veraseal®3 was applied during Richard’s hospital stay to support his breathing while minimizing discomfort.
- The full-face interface provided the fit necessary for NIV therapy.
- The gel-cushioned seal helped reduce pressure points and skin irritation—an essential factor for aging patients with more delicate skin.
- Staff reported that Richard adapted quickly to the mask, experienced fewer mask-related complaints, and was compliant with the therapy throughout his stay.
- By acting quickly, Richard’s care team avoided intubation and helped him recover more comfortably with non-invasive ventilation.
Results
After being discharged, Richard reflected on his hospital experience and shared that the Veraseal®3 was the most comfortable mask he had ever worn. He was especially impressed by the consistent seal and lightweight feel of the AIR°gel® cushion.
While researching the Veraseal®3 and the company behind it, Richard discovered that Sleepnet also offers home care CPAP masks featuring the same AIR°gel® technology. Encouraged by his positive experience in the hospital—and with support from his provider—he decided to try the V3 Full Face Vented Mask for his nightly sleep apnea therapy at home.
After making the switch, Richard experienced increased comfort during nightly therapy, reporting a more restful night’s sleep and better adherence to his treatment. The consistency in fit and feel between the hospital and home mask helped ease his transition and made long-term therapy more sustainable.
This case illustrates the value of:
- A positive clinical experience influencing long-term therapy choices.
- The role of comfort and familiarity in improving patient compliance.
- Sleepnet’s ability to deliver both clinical success and at-home comfort through consistent, patient-centered design across its product lines.
By prioritizing comfort and consistency across care settings, Sleepnet helps build patient trust from acute to home care.
